Ingredients
Just two ingredients—ground flaxseed and water.
Ground flaxseed is a nutritional powerhouse, packed with omega-3 fatty acids and powerful antioxidants. Its numerous health benefits include lowering blood pressure and reducing inflammation.
Ground flaxseed has a neutral flavor, lending itself well to a variety of recipes without impacting the taste. You can find it in the health food section of most well-stocked grocery stores.
Instructions
Combine 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseed and 2 ½ tablespoons of water in a small bowl.
Let the mixture rest for 10 minutes at room temperature, until it thickens and congeals. It may still look a bit runny, but it will be noticeably thicker than when you first combine the ingredients.
Stir well and use in baking recipes, such as vegan banana bread, as a 1-to-1 egg substitute.
How to Make a Flax Egg
Ingredients
- 2½ tablespoons water
- 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed
Instructions
- Mix the ground flaxseed and water in a small bowl.
- Let the mixture rest for 10 minutes at room temperature until it thickens and congeals.
- Use as a 1:1 substitute for an egg in baking recipes.
Notes
- If your baking recipe calls for a flax egg, mix the flaxseed and water as the first step. Then, measure the other ingredients while the flax egg is thickening. By the time you are done measuring the other ingredients, the flax egg should be the right consistency to mix in.
- Store ground flaxseed in an airtight container in a cool, dark pantry or in the fridge.
